MUST-SEE SIGHTS

Parliament

The Parliament

The magnificent building of the Hungarian Parliament is one of the oldest legislative institutions in Europe. It was designed by the Hungarian architect Imre Steindl, the construction began in 1885. It was built in Neo-Gothic style, the architect was inspired by the British Parliament. 40 million bricks and around 50 kgs of pure gold were used during the construction. The building was opened in 1896 on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state and therefore has a symbolic height of 96 meters. The Parliament can be visited as part of a tour.

Matthias Church

Matthias Church

According to legend, the church was built by Saint Stephen (Szent István) himself in the 11th century. It was later destroyed during the Mongol invasion. In the 13th century, King Bela IV. built a new church. Most of the elements visible today come from the 19th century, the original medieval capitals of the columns have been preserved. The temple was named after King Matthias Corvinus, whose coronation took place there in the 15th century.

Heroes' Square Budapest

Heroes square

Heroes' Square is located in the Diplomatic Quarter. In the middle of the square The Millennium Monument (Ezeréves emlékmů) and a 36-meter high column with Archangel Gabriel on top can be found. At the base are the statues of the chieftains of the old Hungarians, whose tribes settled in the Danube Plain in the 9th century AD. Arched colonnades with statues of the most important figures of Hungarian history stretch around the square. The monument was unveiled in 1896 on the occasion of the Millennium celebrations, 1000 years since the arrival of Hungarian tribes in Central Europe. There is also the tomb of an unknown soldier, which is a symbolic tombstone to honor the soldiers who fought for Hungarian independence.

Fisherman's bastion

The Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya) is one of the most popular places in Budapest. Picturesque towers overlook the Danube River, on the opposite side rise the Parliament and the Basilica of St. Stephen. The Fisherman's bastion was built at the end of the 19th century. The Bastion includes 7 towers, which symbolize the seven tribes of the ancient Hungarians who settled in the Danube Plain after 890. The architect of the building is Frigyes Schulek .

St. Stephen's Basilica

Saint Stephen's Basilica

This Budapest neoclassical church, together with the Parliament, are the tallest buildings (96m) in the capital of Hungary. No building can surpass this height, so the Basilica and the Parliament dominate the city center. The Basilica was designed by József Hild, the construction was managed by the architect Miklós Ybl. The construction was completed in 1905, which lasted more than half a century. The floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, with a central dome. In the Basilica there is an observation deck with a view of the entire city. The most important relic of the Basilica is the mummified right hand of the first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen.

Széchenyi Thermal Baths

Széchenyi Baths Budapest

Széchenyi Thermal Baths are the largest medical spas in Europe. There are 11 indoor pools, a large outdoor thermal pool, water attractions, saunas, massage and treatment procedures. The building was built in a neo-baroque style and has an elegant colonnade. The water in the pools is rich in minerals, supplied by two springs with a temperature of 74-77 °C. Thermal water has positive effects on joint diseases and other health problems.

The spa is equipped with the most modern equipment, including whirlpools, bubble baths, special showers for neck and back massages. In summer, night parties with lighting and pool bars are organized in the outdoor pool.
